Phosphorus finished successfully

CineGrid 2009

During the CineGrid 2009 workshop we presented the usage of high-speed networks for the team processing of moving image in high definition. The presentation was prepared in collaboration with the Cinepost company. It was based on the CESNET-developed MVTP-4k device which allows real-time transmission of video in 4k resolution. Seminar on IP telephony and videoconferences

On Tuesday 1. December, we held an experts' seminar dealing with the issues of IP telephony and videoconferences. Over fifty participants listened to presentations focused on services provided by CESNET, example of IP telephony solution used by the university in Pilsen, security topics and up-to-date technical solutions. Jan Gruntorád elected to the GN3 Executive Committee

December 8., 2009

CESNET director Jan Gruntorád was elected a member of the executive committee of the GN3 project which develops GÉANT—the European backbone for science, research and education. The ceremonial launch of the project took place on 1 and 2 December in Stockholm. See further details in our press release.

New network statistics

November 26., 2009

We deployed new system for CESNET2 backbone traffic load visualisation. In comparison to its predecessor, it provides more detailed and hopefully better arranged data. The measurement and presentation is performed by the G3 system, one of the achievements of our research (see the corresponding research activity).

Seminar introduced current MetaCentrum

November 16., 2009

We organised a seminar of grid computing focused on the Czech national grid environment named MetaCentrum. It took place in Brno on 12th November. Main purpose of this seminar was to inform current and potential users of high-performance computing about the contemporary status of MetaCentrum and the possibilities which it offers to solve demanding tasks. Preparatory meeting of TERENA TF Media

On 5th and 6th November Prague will host a preparatory meeting of new TERENA Task Force. The main aim of the Task Force Media will be the matters of creation and distribution of multimedia data. Read the press release for additional information.

Second CRS-1 router installed

October 12., 2009

We installed CRS-1 terabit router to the CESNET2 point of presence in Brno. Backbone nodes in Prague and Brno are now prepared for 40 Gbps interconnection. This improvement doubled the Brno node because the router is installed in new locality. More information is available in the press release.

Networked 3D stereo projection

September 29., 2009

Joint project of Institute of Intermedia of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague and CESNET named Cave to Cave (C2C) was presented on Tuesday September 22 during the ceremonial opening of new stereo-projection equipped classroom at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of CTU. The C2C project focuses on the high-quality interactive transmission of 3D signal. Read more in our press release.

10 Gbps for the Astronomical Institute

In cooperation with the PASNET metropolitan network, we connected the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic in Ondrejov at 10 Gbps. CESNET at the FPL'09 conference

Our association partnered the 19th International Conference on Field-Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL) which was held from 31 August to 2 September in Prague. We presented especially results of our Programmable hardware and Monitoring and Optimizing of Performance Characteristics activities – new cards from the COMBOv2 family and a programmable high-speed network monitoring platform. CESNET as National Grid Infrastructure

The Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport has named the CESNET association as the representative of the National Grid Infrastructure (NGI) in all of the international organizations in which the NGI will be active. Network security seminars

We organized two professional seminars (in Czech) focused on network security issues: Secure Operation of Networks and Services (May 20) and Facilities for CERT/CSIRT-type Teams (May 21). Successful tests of 40 Gbps

The CESNET association has successfully tested the 40 Gbps technology between Prague and Brno during April. We expect to deploy this technology in real operation in the CESNET2 network in 2010. Additional details are provided by our press release.

e-IRG workshop

We organised E-Infrastructure Reflection Group (e-IRG) Workshop in Prague on 14 and 15 May. e-IRG is a working group created to specify and recommend optimal utilisation of the pan-European electronic infrastructure. At May 13, the Czech television broadcasted on its news channel CT24 the Milenium programme focused on the future and visions of Internet. This topic was related to the Future of the Internet conference which took place in Prague. Guests of the programme were Jan Gruntorad, the director of CESNET, and Mario Campolargo, the principal scientific officer with the European Commission DG INFSO (Information Society). CESNET in Czech Television

April 22., 2009

TV programme Milenium, broadcasted at the Czech news channel CT24 at April 20, focused on CRS-1 router deployed in CESNET2 network. Two CESNET employees performed in the programme – Jan Gruntorad, director of CESNET, and Vaclav Novak, CESNET2 network chief designer  – together with Tomas Kupka, the technical director of Cisco Systems Czech Republic. MTPP monitoring platform in routine operation

We started to monitor data traffic on the line interconnecting the CESNET2 network and commodity Internet by the MTPP (Modular Traffic Processing Platform) programmable device. Developed by CESNET, this platform enables dynamic reconfiguration of the firmware modules during full operation which is its major benefit when compared to systems available on the market. Successful evaluation of 2008 research

Evaluation of results achieved during the solution of our research plan Optical national research network and its new applications in 2008 was successful. The evaluation passed in premises of CESNET at Fabruary 9th. The board of oponents stated that the goals for 2008 have been fulfilled and the results achieved are excellent. Evaluation of project granting access to the Web of Knowledge

January 30., 2009

Evaluation of five-year project titled Multilicense to access the Web of Knowledge (access to the Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports) took place at January 29. The project has been granted by Czech ministry of education to the Library of Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. CESNET performed the role of administrator during the whole project duration (2004 to 2008). The evaluation was successful and the performance of CESNET was highly appreciated. Live a Video Surgery 2009

January 30., 2009

We participated in the live video transmissions of eye surgeries broadcasted during the meeting of ophthalmologists named Live a Video Surgery 2009 organised at January 23. and 24. We provided the technology to interconnect multiple partners involved, making it possible to transmit live video from several operating rooms simultaneously to the conference hall. The videostreams were transmitted over the CESNET2 network. Further details are covered by the press release.

EGI Policy Board Meeting
