Terabit router in the CESNET2 network

We deployed the top Cisco CRS-1 router in the network backbone. Thanks to its internal throughput extending 1 Tbps, it is able to replace several separate devices. Read the press release for additional information.

Grid computing seminar

Launch of the FEDERICA project

The FEDERICA project has been launched officially in Lion today. Its goal is to implement experimental virtual network infrastructure for the testing of new networking technologies. The Czech Republic participates in the project through CESNET. Our country belongs to four countries where the key resources of project infrastructure backbone are installed. IP telephony and videoconferencing seminar

We organised a seminar dedicated to new trends in IP telephony and videoconferencing. Its purpose was to disseminate this knowledge to connected institutions and to further enhance the usage of modern collaborative tools. There were almost 70 experts participating on the event. EGEE Meeting in Prague

UltraGrid demonstration for Internet2

October 29., 2008

During the October meeting of Internet2 consortium, we presented the UltraGrid technology enabling high-speed videoconferencing. Data packet distribution between the three participating sites (New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Brno) was performed by the UDP reflector—a device device developed by CESNET. COMBO and COMBOv2 presented at the FPL 2008 conference

At the FPL 2008 conference, we presented (in the booth of Xilinx, Inc.) the COMBO and COMBOv2 cards developed by CESNET within the Liberouter project, jointly with Stanford's NetFPGA project. Both projects, Liberouter and NetFPGA utilize FPGA technology for accelerating networking algorithms. As a part of proposed cooperation between CESNET and Stanford University, the 10 Gbps cards of the COMBOv2 are being evaluated as a hardware base for the 10Gb version of NetFPGA project.

Training of CERT/CSIRT team members

TRANSISTS CSIRT Training takes place in Roztoky u Prahy this Thursday and Friday. This two-day workshop is designed for CERT/CSIRT team newcomers and persons interested in creation of new security-response teams. Photonic multicast demonstration

Our unique photonic multicast demonstration received exceptional response from participants of the 8th Annual Global LambdaGrid Workshop. We presented a multipoint uncompressed HD video transmission based on the CzechLight Multicast Switch (CLM) 4×4 device developed by CESNET. Detailed information is provided by the press release.

CESNET's director invited to White House Advisory Board meeting

The director of the CESNET association, Jan Gruntorád, is one of the 15 Europeans who received an invitation from the American National Coordination Office for Networking and Information Technology Research and Developments to come to the USA and join the American experts for discussions about the future of computer networking research. Demonstration of advanced tele-medicine

In cooperation with a group of advanced Asian Internet networks the CESNET association is organizing a unique presentation of tele-medicine interconnecting seven medical workplaces. Live footage of endoscopic and radiologic operations from medical workplaces in Japan and Taiwan will be transferred to Europe and remotely consulted. See more in the press release.

Vint Cerf visited CESNET

Today the CESNET academic association hosted one of the founders of the Internet, Vice-president and Chief Internet Evangelist of Google, Vint Cerf. In the Prague premises of the association, Cerf met the association's director, Jan Gruntorád; CEO of CZ.NIC, Ondřej Filip; and the director of the NIX.CZ association, Tomáš Maršálek. New Further development strategy

The 25th General assembly accepted the new Further Development Strategy of CESNET a. l. e. which updates long-term goals of the association and tools to achieve them. Its English translation is available on-line now.

Tutorial: Building Gigabit-rate Routers with the NetFPGA

The NetFPGA tutorial takes place in Brno, 5th September 2008. It will be presented by prof. John W. Lockwood from Stanford University. CESNET is tutorial organizer together with Brno University of Technology and Masaryk University.

Networking Studies 2008 published

We just published the second volume of Networking Studies 2008 proceedings. It contains 13 selected and revamped technical reports organised into four sections: CESNET2 Network, Network Monitoring, Quality of Service, and Services and Applications. The 208-page publication is available on paper from CESNET or as a PDF file to download.

E-Infrastructure seminar

On 9th June 2008, the CESNET conference room hosted a seminar dealing with the development of the e-infrastructure in the Czech Republic. The front speaker was Dr. Eugene Yeh, Director of NCHC – National Center for Supercomputing in Tchai-wan. The Center is running the TWAREN National Academic Network as well. By the purpose and activities, the NCHC is very similar to the CESNET association. Due to the infrastructure and the system developed during the recent years, the NCHC has become one of the leaders in the branch in Asia, while ranking very high worldwide (in TOP500 supercomputers list) as well.

Discussion about CSIRT.CZ

A meeting focused on organisational and technical aspects of the CSIRT.CZ activity took place in Malostranský palac in Prague on 15th April. CZIRT.CZ is a part of security research carried by the Ministry of Interior of the Czech Republic. The goal of this meeting was to discuss the possibility of significant Internet service providers, content and risk-service providers to participate in the CSIRT.CZ workgroup and to achieve consensus in technical and legislative aspects of network security. Andrea Kropáčová from CESNET gave the main presentation as a leader of internationally-accredited CESNET-CERTS team. She is also leading the methodical preparation of CSIRT.CZ.

Meeting of Pierre Auger Observatory scientists

An international meeting of scientists working on the Pierre Auger Observatory Project takes place in Prague from 16th to 18th April. The projecyt is using grids to process massive measurements from cosmic radiation detectors located in the Argentinean Pampa. Read the press release for additional information.

Start of the CSIRT.CZ pilot

CESNET specialists Andrea Kropáčová and Ing. Tomáš Košňar made presentations on a press conference organised within the frame of the project titled Problems of cybernetic threats in light of security concerns of the czech Republic which is supported by the Ministry of interior of the Czech Republic. The press conference announced the creation of CSIRT.CZ team pilot, which is a model solution for CSIRT (Computer Security Incident Response Team). The CSIRT.CZ should in collaboration with CSIRT teams improve the ability of Czech Internet environment to efficiently solve raising security incidents and to prevent them if possible. The advantage and exceptionality of this new team is its direct collaboration with other foreign CSIRT teams by the means of CESNET CSIRT team.

Advanced DWDM Nodes in CESNET2 Network

CESNET2 is one of the first wide-area optical networks in the world, where the most advanced multi-way DWDM technology is implemented to maximize the transmission capabilities. The implementation of a Degree-4 ROADM node enables remote software-switching of wavelengths without any manual intervention. See more in the press release.

CESNET Conference 08 – Call for Papers

If you want to present a paper during the CESNET Conference 08 organised from 25th to 26th of September in Prague, you may to submit your paper now. The major conference topics will be security, middleware and virtualization. More information (including the links necessary for paper submission) is available on the conference web site. The paper submission deadline is 16th May.

Successful evaluation of 2007 research

CESNET passed successfully the evaluation of its research results achieved in 2007. Our major research activities are comprised in the 7-year research plan titled Optical national research networks and its new applications covering a broad range of research topics. The evaluation committee commended the results during the regular annual evaluation and assigned the goals and milestones for year 2008. The press release provides detailed information.

Video Conference of Ophthalmologists

The CESNET association and CNC Praha provided technical means for the unique video conferences at the meeting of ophthalmologists called Live and Video Surgery 2008, taking place last Friday and Saturday, i.e. 25th and 26th January. The meeting was organised by the Ophthalmology Clinic of the Central Military Hospital Prague (Ústřední vojenská nemocnice Praha) and the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University in Prague (1. lékařská fakulta Univerzity Karlovy v Praze). Live HDTV transfers from several operating rooms were implemented using high-quality video conference equipment. Read the press release for further details.
