CESNET experts received research award of the education minister

November 27., 2007

Ing. Jan Radil, PhD. (CESNET), Ing. Josef Vojtěch (CESNET), together with Ing. Miroslav Karásek, DrSc. (Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) received the research award of the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports for the results achived by development of the modular optical amplifiers CzechLight Amplifier. Seminar about IP telephony

We are broadcasting Week of Science and Technology

November 1., 2007

CESNET became co-organizer of the Week of Science and Technology. This event focuses on popularization of science and technology by lectures, presentations of attractive experiments, workshops, non-traditional exhibitions, science cafés, and visits of laboratories and academic workplaces. It takes place in five Czech cities from November 1st to 11th. CESNET ensures live broadcasting and videoarchiving of selected lectures – see more in the press release.

LOBSTER project finished successfully

Week of science and engineering

CESNET became partner of the 7th Week of science and engineering (link in Czech), an event focused on popularisation of science, research and engineering. It takes place in five Czech cities in the beginning of November. Besides the on-line streaming and archiving of selected lessons, our participation includes some speeches given by our specialists.

CEF Networks Workshop 2007

From September 19th to 20th, we organised fourth workshop on optical networks operated by customers, the CEF Networks Workshop 2007. Specialists from almost 20 countries discussed here the experience gained by designing, deploying and operating these networks. There is a press release containing further details.

7th LambdaGrid Workshop

We hosted 7th annual LambdaGrid Workshop in Prague at September 17th to 18th. More than 100 specialists from around the globe took part in this event. TERENA task forces meetings

Last week, Prague hosted the meetings of two specialized Task Forces of TERENA, TF-EMC2 and TF-ECS. Task Force on European Middleware Coordination and Collaboration (TF-EMC2) is a platform for collaboration and coordination in the middleware area. Task Force Enhanced Communication Services (TF-ECS) focuses on the voice services and videoconferencing. The press release provides additional information.

REFEDS activity meeting

We organised first meeting of the REFEDS (Research and Education FEDerationS) activity. 30 professionals in authetisation came from 23 countries to discuss the intra-federation and inter-federation policies. See more in the press release.

2006 annual report

We published the 2006 annual report (PDF, 3.9 MB) summarising our status, activities and results achieved in previous year. Compared to previous reports, we changed the layout and separated English and Czech version (PDF, 4.3 MB).

Network security discussed with Chinese scientists

On 14 August, CESNET hosted a group of seven representatives of state administration, universities, and teams dealing with the security of computer networks in China. At the beginning of the one-day meeting, professor Fang Binxing, director of the Chinese National Security Team (CNCERT/CC China Computer Emergency Response Team/Coordination Centre), familiarized the representatives of the CESNET association with its structure, organisation and fundamental principles of operation, as well as security provisions applied in China in general. Presentations dealing with the CESNET association, CESNET2 network and the operation of the CESNET-CERTS security team were delivered then. A lively discussion during the whole event reflected the active interest of both the parties in getting familiar with the ensurance of network security in China and the Czech Republic.

Public contract for security analysis equipment

CESNET started a simplified under-limit procedure to award public contract titled "Security analysis equipment for the CESNET2 network". All related information is contained in the request for proposals (English version, Czech version is also available).

Meeting of security teams in Prague

May 15., 2007

21st meeting of TF-CSIRT took place in Prague May 2nd-5th. TF-CSIRT (Task Force Computer Security Incident Response Team) organised by TERENA is a platform for collaboration between European security teams. This 21st meeting has been hosted by CESNET which is the carrier of CESNET-CERTS security team. The major purpose of these meetings is a personal contact, experience exchange, development of security techniques and creation of common procedures in announcing and handling security incidents.

CESNET2 transmits unique supercomputing course

April 18., 2007

With CESNET2, the national research and education network, students of the Faculty of Informatics of the Masaryk University in Brno have a chance to take part in a single-semester course in the area of supercomputing systems, organized in cooperation with Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, USA. The course employs both live and recorded high-definition multimedia over high-speed networks with the complementary independent work of students. A lecture by Vint Cerf, "the father of the Internet", held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague on Thursday 5th April will be broadcasted live through CESNET2, the most advanced Internet network in the Czech Republic. The 6th Annual ON*VECTOR International Photonics Workshop took place in the University of California, San Diego at the end of Fabruary. Jan Gruntorad, the director of CESNET, was one of three European speakers. Hist presentation titled Photonics in the Czech Republic is now available online.

CESNET ensures connectivity of the 68th IETF meeting

68th Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) meeting takes place from 18th to 23rd March in Prague. CESNET is one of the meeting partners. We ensure the gigabit connectivity to the meeting venue. See more in the press release.

CESNET in television – recordings

Representatives of CESNET participated in some TV broadcasts in connection with the celebration of 15th anniversary of Czech Internet. Tomáš Košňar spoke in Television News of Nova TV at February 2nd (recording is available in high quality and low quality, in Czech). Interview with Jan Gruntorád was included in Events of Czech Television 1 at February 11th (recording in high quality, low quality, in Czech). Jan Gruntorád also participated in discussion named "15 years of Internet in the Czech Republic" broadcasted by Czech Television 24 at February 12th (recording in high quality, low quality, in Czech). High-quality recording require the 1.5 Mbps data stream, 256 or 384 kbps suffices for the low-quality recordings.

Results of 2006 evaluated successfully

An evaluation committee reviewed research results achieved by CESNET in previous year. The evaluation protocol states that the research continues successfully and the outcomes are excellent, of international importance. Full details are available in the evaluation protocol (in Czech). We released a press release providing more information about this success.

PR meeting in Prague

January 31. to February 2., 2007

Members of TERENA TF-PR and GEANT2 PR Network met in Prague. The meeting containing both PR-related presentations and practical workshops appeared in the nice environment of Carolinum, one of the historic buildings of Charles University in the very heart of Prague.

Issuing of GlobalSign certificates prolonged

CESNET will issue globally accepted server certificates to its members for at least three more years. This is allowed by contract between TERENA and GlobalSign signed at the beginning of this year. See the press release for more information.
