Optical interconnection to the U.S.A. and Taiwan

CESNET participated in building of inter-continental optical interconnection between collaborationg institutions in the Czech Republic, United States and Taiwan. The infrastructure is used for scientific applications, videoconferencing and grid computing. The interconnection is a result of close collaboration between more partners from the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, United States and Taiwan. Press release contains more information.

EGEE workshop

We organised a third workshop for the users of EGEE grid. It was focused mainly on the introduction of the capabilites and usage of this valuable resource.

IBM WebSphere portal technical seminar

CESNET together with the Univerzity of West Bohemia in Pilsen and supported by IBM organised a technical seminar about IBM WebSphere portal. The speakers presented their experience with the deployment of portal-based solutions, integration of portals in university environment and application development.

Seminar High-speed networks for science and research

We organised a seminar presenting the capabilites of high-speed networks and how they can be used in science and research. The seminar included examples of existing projects and applications. It has been finished by open discussion about future development and focusing of research networks.

IGTF starts

International Grid Trust Federation (IGTF) has been established in Boston in early October. Its aim is to improve the integration of authentication systems operated by its members and to ease the mutual usage of grid resources by users. CESNET CA became a member of this federation. HDTV videoconference with White House representative

Milan Sarek became member of WHO experts panel

September 12., 2005

Milan Sarek form CESNET became a member of Czech panel of experts for the World Health Organization (WHO) for the eHealth domain. This panel will prepare participation of the Czech Republic in the Global eHealth Survey mapping the eHealth development in different countries. Press release brings some more details.

Internet broadcast of Ocko TV

We are collaborating with the TV station Ocko on the Internet television broadcast. The broadcast has some rare features – it is available over IPv4 and IPv6, partly in high-quality and partly in new distribution formats (Ogg). More information is available in the press release.

2004 annual report

We published annual report summarizing our results achieved in previous year. As usually it is a dual-language document in Czech and English. It is available in PDF format (0.8 MB).

6NET project completed

August 1., 2005

The international 6NET project on which CESNET took part was officially finalised at the end of June. Its outcome verified the readiness of modern computer networks to transit to the new IPv6 communication protocol. The final evaluation of the project stated unconditional satisfaction with the results achieved. See more in the press release.

Church Internet Broadcast

CESNET specialists participated in the interresting Internet broadcast of the first church service of Jan Zachoval. This unusual broadcast is described in more details in the press release.

CESNET in the Czech Television

Our colleagues Miroslav Karasek and Jan Radil presented the common research activities of CESNET and Institute of Radio Engineering and Electronics of Czech Academy of Sciences in the field of Raman amplifying in the teleview of Czech Television named Czech Heads. Roaming – mobility – eduroam workshop

We organised a workshop addressed to the user mobility in computer networks. Main topics were: mobile and transparent access to the network, user authentication and authorisation (AA), contemporary trends in AA infrastructure, practical experience with AA infrastructure operation and information about the international eduroam project in which we participate. CESNET2 network supports IPv6 multicast

The CESNET2 backbone network now supports delivery of IPv6 multicast datagrams including the IPv6 multicast connectivity to the GEANT network. More in the press release.

GEANT2 network launched

June 14., 2005

Pan-European network named GEANT2 has been started officially in the ceremony in Luxembourg. It is the second generation of backbone network interconnecting national research and education networks in most European countries. Contrary to its predecessor it is a hybrid network supporting at once the common IP routing and the switching of lightpaths. This is the first international network providing such features.

CEF networks workshop

May 16.–18., 2005

Following the last year success we organized second workshop on CEF networks. 72 participants came from 26 countries to listen to more than 30 presentations describing the state-of-the-art and perspectives of the CEF approach. HDTV quality in the CESNET2 network

We released first pilot videorecording which has been recorded, processed and is distributed in full High-Definition Television (HDTV) quality. Compared to common TV the HDTV provides significantly better resolution which makes this technology usable in domains demanding high image quality. The pilot videorecording demonstrates our capability to fulfill such needs. See the press release for more information.

The best Regional Cisco Networking Academy

The Regional Cisco Networking Academy managed cooperatively by CESNET association and Department of tellecommunication technology of Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University has been awarded as the best Regional Cisco Networking Academy in Czech Republic in year 2004/2005. Press release has been released announcing this achievement.

SCAMPI project successful

SCAMPI project has been successfully concluded at the end of March. Its goal was to develop a monitoring platform suitable for high-speed networks. Researchers from CESNET and Masaryk university participated in internetional team solving the task. Achieved results are used in the follow-up project named LOBSTER which aims to deploy a Europe-wide system of monitoring nodes. More in the press release.

The SEEFIRE project

CESNET joined the SEEFIRE project (South-East European Fibre Infrastructure for Research and Education) focused on the development of national research end education networks in the South-East Europe. 2004 annual research report in English

20 Gbps to NIX.CZ

We upgraded our connectivity to the Czech peering centre NIX.CZ to 2×10 Gbps. This capacity is entirely unique in the Czech Republic. We issued a press release containing more information.

6NET Consortium Meeting in Prague

We provided the organising background for the 6NET Consortium Meeting in Prague from 26. until 28. January. Main topics on the meeting schedule were the activity plan for next 6 months and the preparation of final review, because the project ends in half of 2005. 2004 annual research report (in Czech)

We created the Czech version of 2004 annual research report as a deliverable for the evaluation. It contains information about our major activities and results achieved in last year. The report consists of 157 pages and is available in HTML and PDF formats. We are working on English version, which should be published in few weeks.

Year 2004 results evaluated successfully

January 27., 2005

We passed successfully the evaluation procedure of first year of the research plan Optical national research network and its new applications organised on Thrusday January 27. The evaluation committee found that all goals assigned to year 2004 have been fulfilled. The results achieved have been declared excellent, of internetion importance. First 10 Gbps DWDM route in the CESNET2 network

We put into operation the first 10 Gbps DWDM route in the CESNET2 network at the end of 2004. The line interconnect Prague and Brno – the most important nodes. It is the first step towards a hybrid network providing both optical and IP services. More in the press release.
