Advanced seminar on EGEE

The CESNET association and Masaryk University in Brno held an advanced seminar on the EGEE project. Main motivation for the advanced course was to allow potential users get the personal impression from the work in the EGEE Grid and to demonstrate the Grid possibilities in a complex way. Jan Gruntorad became a member of GN2 executive committee

CESNET director Jan Gruntorad has been elected to the GN2 executive committee. This five-member committee manages the work on the GN2 European research project. See more information in the press release.

CESNET participated on the organisation of 5th TRANSITS workshop

November 15., 2004

The 5th TRANSITS workshop was held from November 11to to 12th in Prague. TRANSITS is a three-year European project attempting to establish CSIRT teams (Computer Security Incident Response Teams) and interconnect them to achieve a fruitful and secure communication among them. The regular TRANSITS workshops provide in the first place the information related to the organisational, technical and legal aspects of the team operation, security incident treatment (network attacks, spamming, hacking), and support the development of personal contacts between team members. Two international subjects participate on the TRANSITS project – TERENA and UKERNA – it is also supported by EU. CESNET participated on the organizational background of this meeting.

Seminar on network monitoring and measuring

November 9., 2004

We organised a seminar named Network and traffic monitoring to present our activities and results in this area. The seminar was focused in particular on flow-based network monitoring, measuring of high-speed networks, and end-to-end performance. Presentations (in Czech) and photographs are available on-line. CESNET2 Network has got CEF core

November 3., 2004

All the gigabit lines of the CESNET2 network core are now CEF-based – they are dark fibres empowered by CESNET-operated equipment. The global leght of dark fibres used exceeds 3,000 km. On this occasion we published a press release summarising our achievements in CEF networking.

New development strategy

November 2., 2004

We finished the translation of Further Development Strategy of CESNET a. l. e.. This document was accepted by CESNET general assembly in July. It defines main goals of the association and the general means how to reach them.

EGEE seminar

October 26., 2004

We organised an introductory seminar to the European EGEE project. We presented the possibilities offered by the developed grid infrastructure and its potential applications. Attendees also obtained a practical information about the usage of the grid environment. For more information see the press release.

Start of the GN2 project

September 13., 2004

European project titled Multi-Gigabit European Academic Network (GN2) has been started at the beginning of September. Its puprose is further development of GEANT - the European academic backbone network. The project is coordinated by DANTE. CESNET takes part on the effort, representing the Czech republic. eduRoam

September 10., 2004

CESNET became coordinator of the Czech part of the eduRoam project aimed at the development of user mobility in research and education networks. For some additional information see the press release.

Workshop in Vilanec

September 6.-8., 2004

Workshops focused on coordination of researchers participating on CESNET's projects and on planning of further activities already became a tradition. This one took place in Vilanec, South Moravia. Main topic of the discussions were the relationships to European projects on which CESNET participates.

2003 annual report

September 3., 2004

We published the 2003 annual report of the CESNET association. It recapitulates our activities and results achieved in previous year. Report is bilingual in Czech and English.

CESNET administers access to the Web of Knowledge

August 6., 2004

CESNET became administrator of the project of Czech Ministry of Education No. 1N04144 titled Multilicence for access to Web of Knowledge (access to Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports). This project is a successor of the projects LI200041 (Wide-area multilicence for access to Web of Science database) and LI01043 (Multilicence for the Journal Citation Reports database). The project is carried by a consortium of Czech Academy of Sciences, most of Czech universities and the lagrest libraries. Web of Knowledge (WoK) joins both previous projects into one portal and opens access to many information resources (see www.wos.cz). WoK is accessible only for the project participants, but other institution interrested in the WoK may join the consortium.

The project manager is PhDr. Ivana Kadlecova, director of the Library of Czech Academy of Sciences.

The Liberouter premiere

Our Liberouter team deployed the very first PC router with a COMBO6 card. It is used as an alternative access router to the 6NET network.

ID cards Workshop

June 16., 2004

We organized a workshop named Technical, business and legal solutions for ID cards and PKI. Nine Czech companies presented various proposals of the usage of such technologies. There were more than 50 participants on the workshop. More information including the programme, presentations and photographs are available in Czech language.

IPv6 Workshop

June 1., 2004

In the workshop named IPv6 - development and implementation we presented contemporary status of the protocol and experience gained by its deployment. Programme, presentations, and photographs are now available on-line (in Czech language).

Workshop on CEF Networks

May 25.-26., 2004

We organized an international workshop intended for the exchange of experience obtained by the design and deployment of Customer Empowered Fibre Networks and for support of further effort in this field. Workshop programme, presentations and reccomendations are available on-line.

Live broadcast of VRS 2004 conference

May 17., 2004

CESNET provided a live broadcast of the High-speed Networks 2004 conference which took place in Prague from May 18th to 19th. The broadcast was available through prenosy.cesnet.cz.

CESNET became a partner of GLIF

May 6., 2004

CESNET association became an associated partner of the Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF). GLIF is focused to develop a computer network supporting the most demanding applications. Read more in the press release.

CESNET obtained OUI

April 21., 2004

Organizationally Unique Identifier (OUI) is contained in the first half of the Ethernet address to identify its manufacturer. CESNET obtained the identifier 00-11-17 from IEEE. So the addresses of COMBO6 cards developed and manufactured by CESNET will start by this value (see also the OUI assignments by IEEE).

2.5 Gbps to the GEANT network

Workshop in Trest

Researchers participating in the research plan Optical Research Network and its New Applications met on a three-day workshop in Trest. The workshop program was focused to the start of new research plan and to corresponding international projects.

New technical-economic conditions for network participation

New technical-economic conditions for the participation in Czech NREN (valid since April 1. 2004) have been accepted. They are available in Czech language in MS Word and PDF formats.

Workshop "CESNET2 - National Research Network"

CESNET Development Fund calls for projects

CESNET Development Fund announced new call for projects. The fund offers support for projects thematically related to the activities of CESNET. Project holder may be any regular member of CESNET association - see fund site (in Czech) or special release of our Datagram bulletin (in Czech).

New research plan accepted

Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports informed CESNET officially about the acceptance of the new research plan titled Optical Research Network and its New Applications, proposed by CESNET in 2003. It brings financial support for our research activities for next 7 years. More information is contained in a press release

GÉANT announced IPv6 support

January 21., 2004

During the Global IPv6 Service Launch Event GÉANT representatives announced the support and global usability of this protocol. You can read more in the press releases of Dante and CESNET (in Czech).

2003 annual research report (Czech version)

We created 2003 annual research report as a deliverable for the evaluation. It contains information about our major activities and results achieved in last year. The report consists of 280 pages and is available in Czech language. The English version is under preparation, it should be published in few weeks.

Year 2003 evaluated successfully

January 16., 2004

In 2003 ended the 5-year research plan called "High-speed National Research Network and its New Applications". Evaluation of its last year took place at January 14th at CESNET headquarters. The evaluation committee stated that the results achieved are excellent in international context (see the evaluation report, in Czech). CESNET released a press release about this achievement.
