eduRoam Project Leads to Construction of Roaming between Academic Networks

The construction of roaming between participating organisations' academic networks is the aim of the eduRoam pilot project, which is being co-ordinated by the CESNET association. The project started on 6th September last year. Network users who connect will be able to take advantage of network connectivity not only at the home institution, as has been the case until now, but they will also be able to transparently connect to all the other networks involved in the project. Sixteen countries in the European Union are currently involved in roaming. Thanks to this, users will have a huge network access platform.

The project is restricted to academia and participants connected to the CESNET2 network who meet the principles for accepted use of the CESNET2 network. the Czech University of Technology Electrical Engineering Faculty Prague, the University of Technology in Liberec, the West Bohemian University in Pilsen, the Mining University - University of Technology Ostrava, Charles' University in Prague, the Charles' University Medical Faculty Hradec Kralove and VSCHT Prague and Vysocina Region are currently involved in the project.

You can find details about current trends in roaming between academic networks at the project's website: http://www.eduroam.cz/.

The CESNET association was established by universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic for the purpose of operating a national network for science and research. It is financed by the Government Council for Science and Research and its members. It currently operates the national gigabyte CESNET2 network and is working with Canada, the Netherlands and the USA to build a global lambda GLIF network (Global Lambda Integrated Facility). Thanks to its activities in research into telecommunications and internet technologies, the CESNET association is the Czech Republic's representative in the European GÉANT project, to whose implementation it is actively contributing.
