CESNET has provided a HD broadcast of thyroid surgery

CESNET has provided the technical and technological means for a live broadcast of minimally invasive thyroid surgery, watched by the participants of the Stresovice Spring 2010 – an international medical discussion forum held today (4th March) in Prague-Stresovice by the Otolaryngology Clinic of the Third Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague, in collaboration with the Central Military Hospital in Prague.

The endoscopic thyroidectomy, demonstrated by Dr. Gabriele Materazzi from Italy, was brought to the forum participants in high definition, 1080p, thanks to technology provided by CESNET. The video presentation session utilised multiple video signals in high definition from cameras as well as the endoscope. The bidirectional broadcast also enabled simultaneous discussion of the audience presented in the Congress Centre of the Central Military Hospital with the surgeon directly in the course of the surgery.

The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The association is currently financed mainly from the resources of the governmental Research and Development Board and funds of the association members. The association undertakes research and development in the field of information and communication technologies, and develops a national multi-gigabit optical network CESNET2, designed for research and educational purposes. With respect to its research activities and accomplishments, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in the development of the pan-European network GÉANT and participates actively in the project implementation. Among other things, it deals with the use of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data both through synchronous video conferencing and shared applications and through asynchronous streaming.
