CESNET Organized Network Security Seminars

The CESNET association has organized two professional seminars focused on network security issues.

The first seminar title Bezpečný povoz sítí a služeb (Secure Operation of Networks and Services) took place on 20 April in the Blue Lecture Hall of the Charles University in Prague. This seminar was intended primarily for administrators of smaller networks (such as school or company networks, laboratory networks, dormitory networks), basic Internet services and workstations. Participants had an opportunity to get familiar with basic rules, the application of which increases the security of computer networks and services, allowing for fast response and minimization of damage caused by security breaches.

Another seminar, titled Zázemí pro týmy typu CERT/CSIRT (Facilities for CERT/CSIRT-type Teams), took place one day later at the Masaryk Dormitory in Prague. The task of CERT/CSIRT teams is to provide preventive and active protection of computers and networks, with particular emphasis on consistent and efficient handling of security incidents, including removal of their causes as well as consequences. The seminar was designed for members of security groups, CERT/CSIRT-type teams, and administrators who deal with security aspects of the network and services operation, handling of security incidents and their prevention. The event was a free follow-up to the security seminars organized by CESNET regularly since 2005. Attendees were informed on the latest news from the world of CERT/CSIRT teams, development of services and tools of the CESNET-CERTS team, and new trends in the network traffic monitoring area. The closing lecture was dedicated to cybernetic crime from the legislative point of view.

Seminar websites will offer individual presentations and photos a well as a brief evaluation and topics for future events of this kind provided by organizers of both seminars (http://www.cesnet.cz/akce/).

The CESNET association was founded by universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The association is currently financed mainly from the resources of the governmental Research and Development Board and funds of the association members. The association performs the research and development of information and communication technologies, building and developing the national gigabit optical network, CESNET2, designed for research and educational purposes. With its research activities and accomplishments, the CESNET association can represent the Czech Republic in the pan-European GÉANT2 network construction project, actively participating in the project implementation.
