Experts discussed the IP telephony and videoconferences in Prague

Issues related to the SIP protocol, which is more and more utilized in the IP telephony and videoconferences, were the main topic of the expert seminar that was organized by CESNET association. Eighty domestic network experts from the academic, as well as commercial sphere met in the Blue Meeting-room of the Karolinum in Prague.

The objective of the seminar rested mainly in outlining a solution of IP telephony systems to the administrators of academic networks who might apply them at their workplaces in the future. An overview lecture described videoconferences and informed about the technology development and current trends in the field (HD video), and also services provided by the CESNET association to its members.

The CESNET association has been dealing with the IP telephony and videoconference issues for a long time, as a part of its research activities. Its objective rests, among other things, in development of the IP telephony services and videoconferencing infrastructure, and also in research and development in the voice and video transmission field.

The CESNET association was established by colleges and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. Currently, it is financed mainly from resources of the Research and Development Council and from resources of its members. The association executes research and development of information and communication technologies and builds and develops the CESNET2 national gigabit optical network intended for research and education. Thanks to its research activities and achieved results, the CESNET association represents the Czech Republic in the project of building the GÉANT2 pan-European network and in other international projects. Among other things, it deals with utilization of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data – synchronically in the form of videoconferences and shared applications, as well as asynchronically – by streaming.
