A unique live broadcast of eye operations on the Internet
A unique live broadcast of eye operations was seen on the Internet on 11th October 2007. Four cataract operations with intraocular lens implantation (WIOL) were broadcasted through the CESNET2 national network for science and research from 10:00am until 12:00pm. The transmission of these operations was available upon registration at www.uvn.cz – the website of the Central Military Hospital where the operations were performed. The operations were conducted by Colonel Associate Professor Jiří Pašta, MD, head of the Eye Clinic at the Central Military Hospital in Prague. The technical aspects of the transmission were covered by experts from the Association of Universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic CESNET.
The CESNET Association was established by universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. At present it is financed mainly from the resources of the governmental Research and Development Council and from the resources of its own members. Cesnet is involved in research & development of information and communication technologies and builds and develops the national gigabit optical network CESNET2 intended for research and education. Thanks to its research activities and results, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in the project of building the pan-European network called GÉANT2, and in other international projects. In addition, it is involved in the use of high-speed networks for multimedia data sharing, both synchronously in the form of videoconferences and shared applications, and asynchronously in the form of streaming.
