Thursday, Vint Cerf's Lecture Broadcast to the Internet through CESNET2

A lecture by Vint Cerf, "the father of the Internet", held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague on Thursday 5th April will be broadcasted live through CESNET2, the most advanced Internet network in the Czech Republic. Internet users will have the opportunity to see Cerf's lecture on their screens in a quality comparable to TV broadcasting.

"I'm delighted that it is our network, with its top parameters that will be utilized for the broadcasting of Vint Cerf's lecture. It was he who put me on to the plans for the future development of the Internet during my study visit in the United States in the early 1990s. Since that time I have regarded him highly and I appreciate the opportunity to meet him again," says Ing. Jan Gruntorád, CSc, director of the CESNET association.

Vint Cerf, Vice-President and Chief Internet Evangelist of the Google company, will be visiting the Czech Republic on 4th April, meeting representatives of universities, scientists and students. In the early 1970s, he was among the leaders of the team developing the TCP/IP protocol which formed the technological basis of the Internet, specifying the format and manner of data transmission through the computer network. The principal advantage of the TCP/IP protocols lies in their high data transmission efficiency and fault tolerance.

Vint Cerf's lecture on the future of the Internet will start on Thursday 5th April at 2:30 PM (Central European Time) and will be broadcasted on-line at http://prenosy.cesnet.cz/.

Besides students of the Czech Technical University, students of other universities, mainly technical universities, e.g. the Technical University of Liberec, Masaryk University and Brno University of Technology, will be following the lecture at their lecture rooms within the framework of their instruction.

The CESNET association was founded by universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The association is currently financed mainly from the resources of the government's Research and Development Council and from the resources of its members. The association deals with the research and development of information and communication technologies, building and development of the CESNET2 national gigabit optical network intended for research and education. Thanks to its research activities and achievements, the CESNET association represents the Czech Republic in the Géant2 Pan-European network development project, as well as in other international projects.
