17 SEEFIRE
SEEFIRE is a Special Support Study supported by EU. The project participants are: NRENs from the South-East European countries, CESNET, DANTE, and TERENA who is also the project coordinator. The project has three basic categories of goals:
- Specify strategic goals for the development of networks supporting regional research and education, justify and defend the roles of NRENs in the region and identify countries where governmental support will be necessary for the NRENs to be able to acquire dark fibres. This also involves propagation of the project results outside the region, especially to developing NRENs in other parts of the world (South Africa, Latin America, the Mediterranean and Asia).
- Create an up-to-date list of potentially available dark fibres in the region, including their types and owners, and document the existing technical and administrative experience in using fibre infrastructure.
- Select adequate technical solutions of optical transmission systems with adequate technical parameters and acceptable costs and find companies with experience in laying new optical cables. It is also necessary to investigate the conditions and costs of cable laying, with a special attention to last miles.
