A.2   Usage of the CESNET2 Network by Participants in Research and Education

The functionality and performance of the CESNET2 network, being one of the major goals of the research plan, are continuously evaluated by offering production service to the research and development community. The CESNET2 network and its services are available not just to the association members (Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and universities) but also to all organisations whose main focus is science, research and development, including practical implementation of their results.

The central registry of research intents contains 297 active research intents with 94 research institutions involved. 186 of these research intents have been awarded to CESNET members (26 institutions) and 23 additional institutions working on research intents are currently using the CESNET2 national research and education network.

In order to promote awareness about the potential of high-speed networks and initiate future collaboration, we invited representatives of research organisations to attend a one-day workshop named High-speed networks for science and research. The possibilities offered by leading edge computer networks for the areas of science, research and development were presented by scientists who already have experience with this technology. Beside examples of existing projects and applications, a round table discussion was organised addressing the issue of future directions of the research and education networks.

The CESNET2 network is also used by other organisations involved in research or education. They include research parks, hospitals, schools, libraries or museums. Some of these institutions already have high-speed connectivity - e.g., the National Library of the Czech Republic is connected by a 1 Gbps access link, Teaching Hospitals in Plzeň and Hradec Králové have 155 Mbps links, Moravian Library in Brno 100 Mbps etc.

At present, the following organisations use the CESNET2 network:
