Connectivity

Wireless network connectivity is available during the CESNET 2006 conference in Prague. The access to the Wi-Fi network is based on the eduroam authentication (see more on www.eduroam.org).

Authentication

It is necessary to have valid credentials to connect to the eduroam wireless network. We believe that majority of you can get an eduroam account from your 'home' institution (or your domestic NREN). List of countries connected to the eduroam system and links to national information pages are presented on the www.eduroam.org as well.

We provide temporary eduroam accounts for the rest of you who doesn't have the possibility of getting the regular account from your home organisation. These accounts are valid only during the CESNET 2006 conference. The user names and passwords are available at the registration desk.

Available networks

There are two virtual wireless networks available in the conference venue – eduroam and eduroam-simple.

eduroam

The eduroam network (SSID in fact) is prefered and the most secure one. It requires authentication via 802.1x protocol. So, you have to run special piece of software called supplicant (it is built-in part of Windows XP) which will authenticate you to the network. All the data communication is encrypted when using eduroam network.

eduroam-simple

The second possibility is the eduroam-simple network which implements authentiaction via WWW page. This solution is quite simple (you don't need any special software) but less secure – the data stream is not encrypted. You have to start a web browser after association to the eduroam-simple SSID and open any web page. You will be automatically redirected to the login page asking for your user name and password. In case of successful authentication the network access will be granted to you.

Wired connectivity

There are also Fast Ethernet sockets available at the desks, but only every fourth of them is active (M004, M008, etc.). The behaviour of Ethernet network resembles the Wi-Fi: 802.1x authentication is supported. If you authenticate successfully, the network behaves like eduroam. If the authentication fails or if there is no 802.1x supplicant running on your computer, the network behaves like eduroam-simple with the web-based authentication – you have to open arbitrary web page to be redirected automatically to the login page.

Sending mail

We recommend you to use secured SMTP (port 465) to connect to your domestic SMTP server to send your mails. Plain SMTP connectivity from the conference networks is blocked. If you cannot use the secured SMTP, please modify the configuration of your mail program to use the local SMTP server smtp.eduroam.cuni.cz. This is the only plain SMTP server reachable from the conference networks.

Assistance

We are ready to assist you if some problems arise – write mail to eduroam-support@cesnet.cz or ask by the registration desk.
